The National Consultative Bioethics Committee is multidisciplinary and has 40 members. By law, the Committee brings together personalities of various scientific and philosophical backgrounds. They include: a President appointed by the President of the Republic for a renewable period of two years, who oversees the Committee’s work. 39 members appointed for four years 5 personalities belonging to the “main philosophical and spiritual families” (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim) 19 personalities chosen for their “qualifications and interest in ethical problems” 15 personalities from the field of research (Inserm, CNRS, Institut Pasteur, etc.)
a Secretary General who coordinates the Committee’s work on a day-to-day basis. Our first President was Jean Bernard (1983-1993). Professor Jean-Pierre Changeux took over from 1993 to 1999. In March 1999, the President of the Republic Jacques Chirac appointed Professor Didier Sicard, Professor of Internal Medicine at University Paris Descartes and former head of Internal Medicine at the Cochin Hospital in Paris. In February 2008, the President of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy appointed Professor Alain Grimfeld.
